The Deep Dish...
- APR080196 ACTION COMICS #866 $2.99
ARTWORK: ???Geoff Johns continues to grace the pages of Action Comics with his deity-like penchant for miraculous healing and ethereal creation. With the fiasco of his brief partnership with former-mentor Richard Donner behind him, and a brief stop-off with the Toyman (which you file for future reference, kiddos); Johns now turns his magic touch to the painfully convoluted character of Brainiac. Is he man? Is he machine? Animal, mineral, vegetable? Who cares! Hey, Geoff Johns! I've got this leaky pipe... Think you could swing by and fix it before Friday?...

- APR080243 BATMAN STRIKES #46 $2.25
Bruce Timm and Paul Dini are names associated with reverance in the comics community.
Timm (and Dini) serve as the public faces of Batman: The Animated Series - a cartoon that not only brought joy to Saturday mornings everywhere, but also helped distill the Dark Knight in ways that have been crucially beneficial to the character's role in comics. Heck, if you're anything like me, you'll kiss their feet just for bringing back the oval-less Bat-symbol. Bravo!

ARTWORK: ???The Batman is substantially less beneficial. With the wet embrance of the "Timmverse" still fresh on our lips, no amount of romance-novel dialogue can glamourize the contemporary anime-influenced hyperactivity of the upstart new show. Efforts to win over fans have only brought the series closer to redundancy. Batman Strikes is the inevitable comic book spin-off, and as loathed as I would be to recommend indulging in such an embarassingly irrelevant exercise... I kinda have a soft spot for Killer Croc. Y'know, I actually kinda like the art direction of the show too, even if the designs make me want to swallow the collected Long Halloween so I have something to read when I shove my own head up my arse...

- APR082279 MARVEL ADVENTURES HULK #12 $2.99
ARTWORK: Juan BobilloARTWORK: John Romita JrYou remember that little mini-series last year? I think it was called... Uh... World of Warhulk? Well, yeah, that's great and all, but let's face facts: It was five issues. Sure, there was a tie-in here and there, but that's all beside the point! Only Marvel Adventures: Hulk has been able to promise month-after-month of big guests, big opponents, and big punch-ups! This month the Hulk goes head-to-head with the biggest one of them all. It's been a year of MA: H - it's time to go for the title. Hulk versus Champion of the Universe!

- MAR080141 SALVATION RUN #7 (OF 7) $3.50
ARTWORK: Glen OrbikShips sink, fathers are revealed, saviours are crucified.
I dunno what else to tell you folks. The best I did was skim the outer periphery of Salvation Run, but it struck me as a romping good time! Gorillas killing gorillas, clowns kicking said gorillas, nudenuts getting pissy with said clowns. Those mourning the Martian Manhunter might like to go back and pick up his last major storyarc, but those not wanting to see him get the crap kicked out of him again should probably just move on... Spoiler alert: Yeah, they get off the planet, but I don't think that was ever what the story was about. It was about the violence perpetrated by gorillas, clowns, and nudenuts. See what I'm saying?...

- MAR083797 SILENT HILL SINNERS REWARD #4 $3.99
I don't know how good IDW's overpriced licensed books really are, and I'm pretty sure he isn't appearing in most of the series, but damned if I don't wish Pyramid Head were my character. Better yet, I wish Pyramid Head was everyone's character. Pyramid Head in the Marvel Universe? Pyramid Head in the DC Universe? Pyramid Head in Mortal Kombat? Pyramid Head in Street Fighter? Have any one of these sounded remotely like a bad idea? Nein! Everything goes better with Pyramid Head. Everything. People might even care about Spawn still if he was fighting, working with, or getting his taxes done - by Pyramid Head.

- APR080163 TRINITY #2 $2.99
THE TRINITY as featured on the cover to INFINITE CRISIS #1!Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman: Together in one book.
A pretty sound idea, but I'm fast wondering if I'm going to care. The allure of 52 and the finer moments of Countdown were the unfolding events of the DC Universe pertaining to secondary characters. Black Adam, Steel, the Question, Karate Kid, Red Hood, Superman-Prime; all stars of the previous two year-long series.

It's too soon to tell for sure, but it feels suspiciously like this might be B-grade-superhero-writer Kurt Busiek coming to the table, instead of the the master of the genre who brought us Astro City. Kurt! Where are you? Tell me it's going to be okay! Tell me this is a year-long DCU tour through the eyes of it's most influential players! Tell me this is a showcase of the lesser characters the trinity touch! Tell me it's going to be okay! I can't invest in a year-long epic with a bunch of no-name villains, Kurt. I just can't! Grant stole all my imagination!
