The Deep Dish...
- APR080204 BRAVE AND THE BOLD #14 $2.99
ARTWORK: Phil HesterARTWORK: Mike MignolaIf you're a smokey old leg of honey glazed ham, (like I am), a good pair of characters on the cover is enough to draw your attentions to a team-up book. Sadly, it takes more than that to make these kinds of efforts worthwhile reads, and while I hate to decry the quality of a contemporary comics legend like Mark Waid, it seems like he isn't the man to do this. Robert Kirkman's failure to keep Marvel Team-Up afloat might contradict the theory, but I don't feel a silver age inspired asthetic and no-name villains are going to be the way to keep this book in print. One need only look at the monthly variety hour of Justice League Unlimited to see just how vibrant this kind of concept can be, but I don't expect DC will implement change before the inevitable glass ceiling takes this one.

- APR080191 CATWOMAN #80 $2.99
ARTWORK: Darwyn CookeA return to Gotham means an opportunity to get back to the sassy urban roots of Catwoman's trials on East End. With cancellation looming at #82, it feels like a real travesty that the Catwoman title was dragged into Salvation Run. Not that it will necessarily matter, given changes ahead for Catwoman's role in the DCU, which suggests a return to the role of antagonist to Detective Comics' Dark Knight. Let's hope it's something a little less abrupt.

- APR080206 CHECKMATE #27 $2.99
Bruce Jones tastes a little more obvious in his fusion of espionage and superheroics. Hard to see the book lasting without the influence of Greg Rucka. Sadly, I think the groupie mentality of many modern fans will keep them away, not that Rucka's name was bringing them in in droves. Definitely a disappointing result for a new take on an old idea.

- APR080174 DC WILDSTORM DREAMWAR #3 (OF 6) $2.99
- APR080175 TANGENT SUPERMANS REIGN #4 (OF 12) $2.99

ARTWORK: Ed McGuinnessPresumably Dreamwar is a bit of in-house damage control, using the DC icons to distract, and promote, away from the completely derailed scheduling of Wildstorm's major titles. I couldn't begrudge them for that, nor would I complain about one of the few lasting references to the post-52 multiverse, in Tangent Superman's Reign. Still, it's hard not to feel the apparent absence of a Mortal Kombat/DC Universe mini-series to coincide with the release.
A recent Midway survey asked fans to choose from a range of bonuses to be potentially included with a special edition release, among them an official comic; something that suggests no current plans. There's still plenty of time for announcements before November, but I'm not holding my breath. Disappointing!

- APR082303 INCREDIBLE HERCULES #118 SI $2.99
ARTWORK: Jim CheungIt's crossover season, which means fans of insular titles like Incredible Hercules would traditionally be groaning at the sight inevitable interruption. Fortunately for them, Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente continue to prove their chops with their rollicking ride of biffery and battles. The Skrull invasion unites Hercules and a pantheon of usually unrelated gods in combat against the mysterious gods worshipped by the Skrull!

Simple, but brilliantly so!

- APR080215 JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #22 $2.99
ARTWORK: Michael TurnerNot to be outdone by recent battles between a Skrull-Vision and the Sentry; Red Tornado launches a full fledged assault against an unsuspecting Justice League! Latent Amazo programming is to blame, but is this the beginning of the Tornado Tyrant, or does the wind elemental have the moxxy to resist his sinister urges? CHAOS MAGIC~!!!

- APR082281 MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS #25 $2.99
2007 gave us the all-MODOK issue that defined the pinnacle of what was possible for an Avengers comic [Marvel Adventures: Avengers #9], but if you thought the big-headed good times were over, you were wrong! The spiritual sequel is on the way, and this time it's Arnim Zola who's come to bedazzle Earth's mightiest heroes! 'Nuff said!

- APR082319 WOLVERINE #66 DWS $2.99
ARTWORK: Leinil YuARTWORK: TBAMark Millar's eagerly anticipated return to Wolverine begins here in "Old Man Logan"!
The Infinite Wars favourite writer follows up on the success of his action-packed twelve issue story, Enemy of the State, with a romp into a post-apocalyptic future! The story reteams the Scot with his critically acclaimed Civil War collaborator, Steve McNiven, and promise as menu containing the nutrition of: inbred Hulks; black-suited Spider-Bitches; a blind, drug-dealing Hawkeye; and a Wolverine who, after surviving a superhero apocalypse, spends his fifty years in the future alone and without the snikt of adamantium claws! If you can't get behind this, get out of the damn way, nancy! It's an Eastwood action epic for the post-Marvel age!
