The Spotlight...
- FEB090155 BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL #2 (OF 3) $3.99
After the first issue snorer, this compilation-style series will want to find grounding in some solid plotting and story. The go nowhere montage of events in the first issue, though action packed, felt hollow and irrelevent. Quos were newly statused as Black Mask marched back onto the scene, apparently no longer suffering from a terminal case of death; Bruce Wayne's obnoxious illegitimate son nicked a Batmobile and crashed it into Killer Croc; and Nightwing generally took an unconvincing tumble. Stuff happened, but it all felt like homework. With only two more issues to go, I must say I'm sceptical, but here's hoping for a more organic second issue. Oh yeah. Pretend to be shocked when Dick becomes Batman, and Todd turns out to be the phony. Apparently it's a surprise?

- FEB092481 DAREDEVIL NOIR #1 (OF 4) $3.99
So you're going to take the Marvel heroes and villains and reimagine them as depression-era vigilantes, cops, and crooks. The House of Ideas might have led with two of it's more bankable properties - X-Men and Spider-man - but when it comes to suitability they've saved the best to last. Joining Punisher on the urban streets of grim and grity comes Daredevil -- a character whose noir trappings have already been well documented in the Marvel Universe-proper. After you've done Miller and Bendis, this might be redundant, but clearly the Noir books have found an audience. Not sure it's for me, but you can't fault the concept!

- DEC080128 GREEN LANTERN #39 (ORIGINS) $2.99
Ah, the book that's just rubbing colour blind people's noses in it!
Geoff Johns' unadvertised epic - the War of Light - continues as the Controllers unveil the latest Corps to colour burst onto the scene -- those greedy scions of avarice, the Orange Lanterns! This Corps differs in that there is a set number of rings available to be attained only by those who are willing to lie, cheat, and steal their way into the fold! One wonders how Hal Jordan might find his way into the possession of such a ring as he continues to absorb the powers of the spectrum in what logically could lead to the birth of a super-cool White Lantern. If white light contains all colours in the spectrum, that seems like a reasonable counter for the upcoming Corps of the corpses, the Black Lanterns! The beauty of this tale isn't just it's spanning mythology, but the way each Corps plays with their emotive concepts, like blue Hope requiring the green energy of Will to be at all effective; or the fact that red Rage in the hands of one who wields Will was able to be channeled into something constructive (ie; objects). It's all very literal, and very fun!

- FEB092557 MARVEL ZOMBIES 4 #1 (OF 4) $3.99
Way back in 2005, Mark Millar thought it would be a good idea to finally take the iconic heroes of the Marvel Universe, and throw them into a pit of infectious zombie plague carriers. Not a bad idea, by any means. One that should've been undertaken much sooner, one could think, however, when reflecting upon the subsequent four years of non-stop exposure of the high concept, it loses some of it's sheen. At least, until now... Fred Van Lente picked up the ball with Marvel Zombies 3, bringing the infected survivors of Earth-1610 into the Marvel Universe-proper via the Nexus of Realities! A series of unfortunate events later, we now resume with Dr. Michael Morbius leading a new team of Marvel Horrors against the unique strain of zombie-itus! Jack Russel, Jennifer Kale, and Damian Hellstrom join the gang as they clash with zombie fish-men, all while Black Talon negotiates with The Hood for control over the dark army. All this, PLUS -- the adventures of Zombie Deadpool's decapitated head!

- FEB090195 SOLOMON GRUNDY #2 (OF 7) $2.99
A pattern of indulgent superhuman fisticuffs appears to be emerging from Scott Kolins' seven-issue turn as writer/artist, but while the titular character might draw fair comparison to his Marvel counterpart, this series is far from a hopelessly meandering Jeph Loeb mystery cum punch-up, ala; Hulk. Grundy finds himself facing the opportunity to resolve his endless cycle of resurrections, but at each turn there lies another obstacle. The secret origins of the undying creature are gradually revealed as he enters a desperate scramble to survive long enough to solve his murder before seven days are up!

- FEB092564 TIMESTORM 2009 2099 #1 (OF 4) $3.99
There's a charming simplicity to the idea of taking Marvel's now classic 2099 future universe and colliding it with the 2009 adventures of the Marvel Universe! For my money, the success of the series lies in how detached it can be from overstuffing the title with the unfamiliar. A bit of a longshot really, and unlikely to be a career highlight for Ms. Marvel scribe, and Timestorm writer, Brian Reed. Still, this'll be a good one for the 2099 enthusiasts, who've had little more than late issues of Exiles to scratch their future-itch.
