The Spotlight...
- MAY090130 BATMAN AND ROBIN #2 $2.99
The nefarious debut of Professor Pyg looms as Batman and Robin go up against the Circus of Strange when they invade the Gotham City Police Department! The action kicks off as Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely deliver their brand new vision for the Bat-franchise in the Reborn world! The first issue might've started things off a little slow, but there's plenty more madness waiting around the corner for this all-new, all-exciting Dynamic Duo! Quite possibly the only series big enough to rival Blackest Night!

- MAY090412 CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #1 (OF 5) $3.99
It's been less than two years, but to the shock of absolutely no one, Steve Rogers is on his way back to the land of the living! His death was one of the biggest stories of 2007, covered by mainstream news outlets, and discussed the world over. Now we're going to undo all that. I really don't expect this to do much for relations between the mainstream and the comic book reading in-crowd, but we'll see if it's all worth it now that the story proper is finally kicking off. There's a lot of goodwill lost after the fake-out of the Annual special that claimed to be the beginning of the [Captain America] Reborn storyline. Here's hoping they can earn some of that credibility. Honestly, I'm feeling a little cynical about the whole situation.

- MAY090544 DEADPOOL MERC WITH A MOUTH #1 $3.99
For a long time there was a good reason for Deadpool to be touted as one of Marvel's great characters. Despite sales that failed to reflect it, in the late nineties this was a character who was every bit as funny and fresh as people say he is. Slide into the 2000's and you pretty quickly begin the deconstruction of everything that made the character work, until you get to the inane Daniel Way crap idiot kids post everywhere on the internet, and the movie version. Merc' with a Mouth, co-starring Marvel Zombies' Z-Pool, sounds like a great idea, but sadly, looks to be more of the same disappointing crud that's going to fastrack Deadpool to loathesville. This should've been the beginning of a new dynasty, but instead, it seems DP's fate is all but being sealed.

- MAY090114 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #38 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99
We're now just weeks away from Blackest Night, but let's face facts. Green Lantern Corps doesn't need a bunch of Black Lantern zombie dudes to crank up the action -- it's already one of the hottest books on shelves right now! Events haven't been hurt by foreshadowing of doom to come as the Guardians of the Universe dig a little deeper toward their own grave with yet more killing and mayhem. It'll be interesting to see how dissention in the ranks effects the Corps when the skeletons in their collective closet come out to play! Tomasi and Gleason are one of the best pairings in superhero comics right now. Don't wait until the Blackest Night has come and gone -- get reading this yesterday!

- MAY090159 JUSTICE LEAGUE CRY FOR JUSTICE #1 (OF 7) CVR A $3.99
After a lot of publicized confusing an indecision; finally DC and James Robinson are working on the same page and he can unveil his much needed revamp of the Justice League of America! I'm not sure Robinson would've been the guy I'd have tapped to fix the mess made of the JLA, but with a line-up that reintroduces Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Atom, Captain Marvel, and a handful of other characters into the League, I don't see how you could go wrong! Now if we could just guarantee that they make the transition over into the monthly JLA line-up, then we'd be set...

- MAY090514 MARVEL DIVAS #1 (OF 4) $3.99
I keep making the frustrating mistake of confusing this with fellow all-girl Marvel book, Models Inc. With artwork by Tonci Zonjic lending a typical grounded version of the superhero universe, it looks as if the series will certainly look good, whilst reading well, as well. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa handles the almost Sex and the City-esque girl power line-up of Photon, Firestar, Black Cat, and Hellcat, in what seems sure to be a heckuva lot of fun! I don't know how well it will compliment Models Inc, but if Marvel want to build a wing around their female properties, why not? Now if we could just get a Lady Liberators book...

- MAY090169 SOLOMON GRUNDY #5 (OF 7) $2.99
Ideally, we'll get a chance to go back and revisit all of these issues later in the year (October), because there hasn't been a month gone by that an issue of Solomon Grundy hasn't deserved a spot here on The Comic Book Fight Club! Admittedly, as a narrative, it's a bit like a 4x4 speeding in mud. This isn't the most progressive or cerebral title you'll find on shelves, but Scott Kolins is competent as both writer and artist, making the very best of his monthly punch-ups between interesting combinations. It's Solomon Grundy and it's a lot of fun. I'm not sure I could ask for more than that, but if I did, Amazo might just be it!
