The Story So Far...
Avengers Mansion has fallen into the grip of Baron Zemo and The Masters of Evil! Their siege has claimed not just the heroes' headquarters -- but also one of their mightiest ranks!

For daring to charge the building alone, Hercules received a devastating beatdown that left the demigod barely clinging to life! Rushed to hospital, he was declared dead, but The Prince of Power's bold heart refused to stop beating for long!

Captain America was captured providing backup, but Wasp escaped to accompany Hercules to the hospital. Joined by Ant-Man, she stands as the last line of defense for Herc and The Avengers -- and a walking target as The Masters of Evil deploy Absorbing Man & Titania to finish her off!

Don't look now! It's a tag team showdown of Marvel Comics power couples with a debuting partner on both sides, but these pairs aren't created equal!

Carl "Crusher" Creel was a small time crook & boxer who was dosed with an enchanted potion by Loki while in prison. The concoction of Asgardian herbs granted Creel the power to absorb physical properties of anything he comes in contact with, transferring it to himself, his clothes, and a prison ball & chain.

The Absorbing Man typically chooses metals and stone, enhancing his strength and durability to go up against the likes of Thor and Hulk, but he's also capable of more inventive transformations, such as gases, liquids, energy sources, and supernatural materials. He can even rearrange his composition, enduring dismemberment, and forming irregular shapes such as hammers for fists.

Creel first met Titania during the original Secret Wars when she was unveiled by Doctor Doom and deployed against the Fantastic Four. An antagonistic relationship soon turned romantic as the pair became partners in crime and wedlock. They continued to battle each other's rivals, facing She-Hulk, Thunderstrike, Spider-Man, and The Avengers after joining up as enforcers for The Masters of Evil.

Scott Lang may be the second Avenger to assume the mantle of Ant-Man, but he's no stranger to prison himself. Unable to support his young family as a repair man; he used his skills as an electrical engineer to become a burglar, eventually breaking into the residence of Dr. Hank Pym -- the original Ant-Man!

Formally granted Ant-Man's suit after proving himself altruistic, he gained all the skills of Pym particle technology, favouring shrinking over enlargement, command of ants including winged varieties, a concussive "disruptor" blast, and eventually wrist-mounted gauntlets similar to the Wasp's bio-electric stingers.

We've seen the high-flying Janet Van Dyne cut down opponents many times before, blasting the likes of Moonstone, Pyro, Dragon Man, and Kingsize!

This seems like a fairly one-sided affair, with Absorbing Man and Titania typically mixing it up with a different weight class. The Tape gives us our best insight into how the diminutive heroes level the playing field, relying on intelligence, speed, agility, and firepower to mitigate the mighty strength of their opponents.

The Tape: Absorbing Man & Titania Ranking: Wasp (#39)

What Went Down...

Walls crumble as Absorbing Man and Titania stomp their way past helpless security and hospital staff -- on the warpath to The Avengers inside!

Nurses do their best to usher vulnerable patients out of the building as Wasp and Ant-Man shrink down to unnoticed size and race against the herd. Lost amongst the rushing feet, they aim to make a stand to defend a gravely injured Hercules.

Wasp makes the first move -- answering Absorbing Man's search by flying directly into his gaze with her bio-electric stringers blasting!

The sudden assault is enough to shock Absorbing Man out of his steel-skin!

Momentarily blinded by the flash, he clutches at his eyes in human form -- vulnerable as Wasp encourages Ant-Man to strike!

The diminutive hero rapidly returns to normal size, taking advantage of his blinded foe with a dazzling uppercut!

Titania launches herself at the Ant-Man in a furious rage, but with Wasp watching his back, he knows it's coming -- and shrinks beneath the reach of the rampaging villainess to leave her colliding face-first with a nearby wall!

Not taking too kindly to being outwitted -- Absorbing Man reaches into a power junction and makes contact with the electricity. He receives enough raw power to add another "smart guy" to the list he's stomped.

Absorbing Man is a real bright spark as his body absorbs the charge and he swings his electrified wrecking ball over head!

Wasp and Ant-Man have no choice but to flee the walking bug-zapper, while Titania continues smashing through walls to enter the operating theatre housing the mortally wounded Hercules!

Titania has no regard for the demigods' critical condition, but stops short of making good on her threats to worsen his situation when Ant-Man directs a small army to swarm all over her body!

The maddening predicament shocks Absorbing Man out of his electrified state, sending him in search of a bottle of alcohol so he can assume its properties and become a living wash over his partners' ant-covered body!

The alcohol shower does the trick, but pulling himself back into humanoid form leaves Absorbing Man feeling disoriented -- and open to a tandem direct assault from Wasp's stinger and helmet Ant-Man's disruptor!

The blow stuns Absorbing Man, but once again Titania comes to the aid of her man -- immediately snatching Wasp out of the air!

Ant-Man is there to assist his fellow Avenger as well, riding his flying ant into range to toss a small canister at Titania.

It erupts into a gas that shrinks Titania down to the same diminutive size as the insect-like heroes. An equalizer that leaves her vulnerable to Wasp's stinger!

Absorbing Man groggily stumbles through the operating room in desperate search of a source of absorbable power. He finds only the unconscious Hercules, but before he can absorb the strength of a demigod -- Wasp is on him!

The full-size heroine flies overhead and hooks her legs under Absorbing Man's arms, briefly taking him off his feet before unleashing her full bio-electric stinger directly at his head!

The Absorbing Man drops like a mighty oak, slamming face down on the surgery floor -- knocked out! Ant-Man strolls in with a similarly unconscious Titania over his shoulder, noting Wasp's toughness as they relax in victory.

The Hammer...

Occasionally over the years I've been asked to weigh-in on "who would win a fight" between various characters. It can make for a fun conversation, but the more I do all of this, the more I'm reluctant to give any real answer, drifting away from that type of thing.

Secret Wars on Infinite Earths exists to some extent to provide solid reference material for exactly these kinds of debates, but despite our sports-inspired format, comic book superhero fights aren't determined purely by skill or abilities. It's an exercise in plot and narrative. Discussing abilities is a good jumping off point, but it's kinda putting the cart before the horse.

Stan Lee -- after decades of receiving these kinds of questions -- put it with affable simplicity in his Stan's Rants YouTube series: "There's one answer to all of that; it's so simple. Anyone should know this! The person who'd win in a fight is the person that the scriptwriter wants to win!"

Which means Absorbing Man and Titania may be obvious favourites in a fight against Wasp and Ant-Man, but that's exactly why they will more than likely lose. It just wouldn't be interesting if these things were foregone conclusions. The heroes can't simply be smeared across the pavement, and when a super-villain holds such an overwhelming advantage over a hero -- that just better defines the heroism of finding a way to overcome and defeat them.

That's why we still talk about Spider-Man beating Juggernaut, Batman matching Superman, and why Wasp is now nestled comfortably in our Top 40 ranks! [And as a matter of record: Spielberg won two Best Director Oscars for Schindler's List (1994) and Saving Private Ryan (1999), so Ant-Man should have more faith].

Of course, in the interest of avoiding foregone conclusions, sometimes the heroes have to lose, and The Avengers are facing one of their most stunning defeats, this issue taking place during the Siege of Avengers Mansion.

Wasp & Ant-Man's victory at the hospital defended a mortally wounded Hercules, whose vital signs are strengthening after an earlier flatline, but Baron Zemo and The Masters of Evil still have control of the Avengers' HQ. A violation Wasp vows to avenge after doctors have delivered the good news, and issue closes.

Wasp has been in a leadership role around this time, and it's kinda cool to see her playing pointman as the team attempts to regroup. She and Ant-Man could be easily overlooked heroes, but they're both well suited to rallying the troops, and making a surprise attack against The Masters of Evil.

You can rest assured we'll be looking at more from the "Avengers Under Siege" storyline, and Hercules' brutal defeat, at some point in the future.

AVENGERS versus MANDARIN

The Story So Far...
A series of sudden super-villain attacks have stretched the ranks of The Avengers across the country as they respond to the decimation of their coastal island Hydrobase, and underground Manhattan headquarters!

Only Edwin Jarvis is on hand to raise the alarm when The Mandarin begins a frontal assault on an already damaged & unguarded Avengers Park. All thanks to Loki and his Acts of Vengeance designed to organize and consolidate the resources of some of the world's most powerful super-criminals!

Not content to leave their butler to face another siege: Captain America leads the call to assemble on Central Park -- but with The Wizard circling the skies over New York City, the star-spangled super-soldier will have to rely on the few local heroes able to answer the call!

The Avengers are: Captain America, Black Widow, and Hellcat.

Wonder Man and Vision accompanied Captain America on the trip from the West Coast, but had to peel away to take on The Wizard. That means Cap is relying on unpowered first responders Black Widow and Hellcat -- less than ideal against the ten rings of power wielded by The Mandarin!

Although appearing mystical in nature, each of Mandarin's rings is originally part of an alien technology that grants him specific skills. The names and breadth of their power has changed over the years, but the basics remain true:

The Ice Blast, or "Zero" Ring, is worn on the left little finger, and does exactly what it sounds like, generating sufficient cold to freeze anything in ice. That might give Cap some unfortunate flashbacks to his post-war suspended animation, but as we saw when he battled Cold War, he can keep a handle on it.

The Mento-Intensifier, or "Liar" Ring, is worn on the left ring finger, and can be used to bring a person under Mandarin's thrall, or generate a world of inescapable illusion penetrating the victim's very mind.

The Electro-Blast, or "Lightning" Ring, is on the left middle finger, and can deliver powerful bolts of electricity through the air! A power not unlike its namesake, but Cap's shield was able to absorb Loki's electric attacks in Avengers (Vol.2) #1.

The Flame Blast, or "Incandescence" Ring, worn on the left index finger, can super-heat the air by emitting radiation to fire potent jets of flame of varying intensities. Another one handily blocked by Cap's shield, as seen when he met Ghost Rider in Avengers #214!

The White Light, or "Daimonic" Ring, is worn on the left thumb, and traditionally emits various electro-magnetic spectrums, which has also been known to effect a susceptible target's mood, or mental state.

The Black Light, or "Nightbringer" Ring, sits on the right little finger, and projects an area of total darkness. Its energies are associated with the inter-dimensional Darkforce used by Darkstar for a variety of offensive & defensive projections, and contained within Cloak, who can trap opponents within its endless darkness.

The Disintegration Beam, or "Spectral" Ring, worn on the right ring finger, is traditionally used to destroy anything it strikes, unmaking it on a molecular level with an estimated 20-minute charge time. Cap's no stranger to avoiding those kinds of attacks, dodging Red Skull's blast cannons since the Second World War!

The Vortex Beam, or "Spin" Ring, is wielded on the right middle finger, and can allow The Mandarin to fly, levitate targets, or generate massive swirling winds as offensive weapons. It has also been associated with moving at super-speeds.

The Impact Beam, or "Influence" Ring, is a standard favourite for The Mandarin, using his right index finger to direct powerful blasts and waves of energy. It's an equivalent to a lot of energy blasters, such as Titanium Man's, which Black Widow was agile and canny enough to avoid, with added shielding from Iron Man!

The Matter Re-Arranger, or "Remaker" Ring, is worn on the right thumb and allows for limited molecular and atomic manipulation of matter. It's commonly used for generating poisonous gases from thin-air, and altering Mandarin's appearance.

Agility and avoidance are the greatest tools Captain America, Black Widow, and Hellcat have at their disposal. The Mandarin's rings are incredibly powerful, but also limited in their scope. His defense is shored with a modern suit of armor, but a coordinated strike could potentially still defeat him!

The Tape: Avengers Ranking: Captain America (#7)

What Went Down...

Black Widow and Hellcat leap across the rooftops as Captain America's modified quinjet soars down beside them on a course towards Avengers Park.

He hails the assembling heroes over the jet's exterior speaker and advises them to hang back while he takes a recon flight over the attack sight. It's a good plan to protect his unpowered teammates, but the Captain never gets to make the flight -- blasted out of the sky by The Mandarin!

The Quinjet makes a dramatic, skidding crash landing into the rubble of Avengers Park as The Mandarin gloats over his successful strike!

Mandarin stalks toward his prey with Cap slumped in the exposed driver's seat -- rattled by the violent impact that tore the jet open like a tin can! 

The villain clutches the barely conscious Captain in the pilot's seat and raises his hand to prepare a killing blow -- but it's suddenly snared by the Black Widow's high tensile line!

Black Widow yanks The Mandarin away from the jet and introduces herself to the stunned villain.

Enraged at her interference he pivots to draw his free hand and blast a stream of fire from the ring of Incandescence. Widow narrowly avoids it, delighting at the unseen arrival of her comrade in arms -- Hellcat!

Hellcat leaps onto The Mandarin's armored shoulders and rakes her steel alloy claws across his frustrated façade!

The villain struggles beneath the grip of Hellcat's entangled arms and legs while Black Widow takes the opportunity to rush in an deliver a flying kick!

The two-on-one advantage doesn't last long. The Mandarin catches Black Widow by the ankle and tosses her across the park -- while also flipping Hellcat off his back and over his shoulder!

They spill across the rocky terrain -- vulnerable to another of his ring attacks!

The Influencer ring sprays concussive energy blasts across the battlefield that shatter the very ground beneath Black Widow & Hellcat's feet!

The heroic pair look severely outgunned when The Mandarin is once again caught by surprise from another attack at the rear!

This time it's Captain America who's able to return the favour to his allies, tossing his mighty shield directly into The Mandarin's armored helmet!

The chauvinistic villain is frustrated by Cap's recovery, but accepts that the battle can now be between men "as it should be". His Ice Blast "Zero" ring makes for an unfortunate irony as he encases Captain America's feet in ice -- a chilly fate all too familiar to the super-soldier once suspended in a frozen tundra.

At that same time -- Mandarin's partner in the Acts of Vengeance, The Wingless Wizard, glides overhead, bringing his battle with Wonder Man & Vision into convergence with the other Avenger's struggle.

Spotting the immobilized Captain America from the sky above -- The Wizard attempts to finish him off with a blast from his gauntlet, but Cap lurches forward into an evasive diving roll!

Wonder Man regains The Wizard's attentions, while The Mandarin plots a strategic retreat, blaming his ally for fouling his attack. He's so distracted by the failure he doesn't notice yet another Avenger arriving until his struck by his hammer!

Mjolnir collides with Mandarin's armored body and knocks him off his feet before flying back to the waiting hand of Thor!

The God of Thunder doesn't take kindly to The Mandarin's abuse of his powers!

He charges the rising villain, striking mightily with with a hammer-held uppercut!

Meanwhile, Vision comes to Captain America's aid, melting the ice from his feet with carefully applied eye beams. The liberation allows all Avengers present to assemble against the tyrannical twosome!

The Mandarin summons the dark forces of the Black Light Nightbringer ring to shroud his enemies -- and The Wizard -- in inescapable darkness!

He condemns his ally to suffer the consequences of their defeat, while the veil of darkness allows The Mandarin a clean getaway. He flies into the air -- gone before the heroes regain their sight.

The Hammer...

The arrival of Thor tips the scales in favour of The Avengers and drives The Mandarin into a hasty retreat. Bad news for The Wizard, who's left to face the music when his co-conspirator in the Acts of Vengeance betrays him upon exit!

Wizard was otherwise engaged in a completely separate aerial skirmish with Wonder Man and Vision, but chose to converge with the fighting in Avengers Park, taking potshots at Captain America. Not his only tactical error it would seem, but we'll take a closer look at his fight another time.

As it happens: the in-fighting is rife amongst the bad guys, who're duking it out while observing from their private meeting chambers, as well.

It seems Doctor Doom has nothing but contempt for The Mandarin and the inefficiencies of his frivolous, showy fighting style, while Red Skull is losing patience with Doom's arrogance. An inevitably violent clash of egos ensues -- another battle for us to return to some time in the future.

As a matter of housekeeping: Aficionados may also be interested to note I've chosen to predominantly refer to The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #15 when breaking down The Mandarin's rings in The Tape section.

That particular 1984 issue is the wonderfully informative "Book of Weapons, Hardware, and Paraphernalia" -- a reference tome that answered a lot of common fan questions about the basic practicality of various devices, and locations.

With regards to The Mandarin's rings; The Handbook is obviously a little outdated, but the basics remain true. You'll note that I've also included, and alluded to, the more recent names & abilities outlined in 2010's Invincible Iron Man Annual #1.

If you didn't pay close attention to the information, you might like to scroll back and take a second look. It will allow you to appreciate the exquisite attention to detail of artist Paul Ryan's pencils, which assign each blast from The Mandarin's rings to the exact finger. Scripted or not -- it's the mark of a great comics artist!

Ryan was also saddled with the slightly less intricate design Mandarin was wearing around this time. I've never been all that crazy about this armor. It's serviceable, but never seemed to ring true. I suppose I would've preferred something more ornate, reminiscent of the colourfully stylized Chinese armor popular in wuxia.

A colour scheme of green, gold, and a little red or purple would've recalled other eras of Mandarin's design, but I suspect distancing the character from earlier incarnations was a deliberate conceit. When he wasn't in this blue & silver shell, he could typically be found wearing a tasteful suit consistent with his corporate machinations of the time. A welcome evolution for the modern era.

Modernizing the character has been an on-going concern, with greater emphasis on science-based explanations for his rings redefining them as Makluan machine parts accessing other dimensions. Personally, I think this flirts with a loss of imagination, and prefer a Mandarin whose mysticism clashes with Iron Man's technology -- not that the two ideas necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.

I do enjoy the more pulpy depictions of Mandarin, though. At the risk of being regressive: I think my favourite Mandarin design is the green & gold robes he returned to throughout much of the nineties. Its a style that very vaguely alludes to over-the-top villainy of Fu Manchu, albeit with a slightly more convincing approximation of Chinese imperial robes than Christopher Lee's qipao.

These allusions made the character a bit of a tricky subject when Marvel Studios attempted to adapt the character in Iron Man 3, and again, as a Fu Manchu stand-in in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.

The substitution was as much a product of Shang-Chi's fictional father not being a Marvel owned property, but so fraught was their efforts to navigate the minefield of cultural sensitivities for the Chinese theatrical market, it seems the studio took a blank cheque approach. They retained so little from the source that the titular ten rings aren't even worn on the fingers! Not that Marvel Studios have ever been overly concerned with their comic book counterparts...

Here in comic book land Avengers #313 is a serviceable chapter in the Acts of Vengeance storyline, delivering one of the heavy hitters from the inner-circle of the villainous alliance. It's a little weird that so many heroes were dispersed after the action of the last issue, but anti-Avengers public protests explains that.

It's a fun time in Marvel Comics and Avengers history, and I particularly get a kick out of the unlikely team-up between Black Widow and Hellcat! They're out of their league taking on Mandarin, but turn out to be a terrifically fun tag team!

AVENGERS versus NEBULA

The Story So Far...
As strange energy fluxes begin to hit the Avengers; an emergency distress call from Starfox draws Iron Man and Vision to investigate in space. Their fate is unknown when the remaining heroes of Avengers Mansion are pummeled with an energy wave that eradicates existence!

Safely sealed inside a section of the rebuilt mansion thanks to Sersi; Captain America, Thor, Jarvis, and Spider-Man desperately scramble for answers, and a means to survive the infinite vacuum of nothingness!

Recalibrating their limited hardware, Spider-Man discovers another structure floating in the void! When Sersi attempts to make telepathic contact with the PolyDyne Industries survivors -- she's rocked by pure evil! Bridging the gulf with Thor's hammer, the Avengers discover the culprit: the space pirate - Nebula!

The Avengers are: Captain America and Thor, with Spider-Man.

The Avengers have effectively been reduced to a two-man team-up, relying on visiting reservist Spider-Man, and faithful butler Jarvis. The Eternal Sersi was instrumental in protecting the team, but incapacitated by a telepathic episode. Iron Man and Vision were already deployed elsewhere in space at the time.

They face notorious space-pirate Nebula who's known to the Avengers as the alleged grand-daughter of Thanos. Whether her lineage is true blue or not, she's certainly shown a similar penchant for sadism, destruction, and survival.

She possesses incredible natural strength, endurance, and energy powers, as well as frequently acquiring advanced alien weaponry, with the mastery to make the most of it. She also has a merry band of scum and villainy to call upon, once used to subdue Silver Sufer! Of course, as we saw in Secret Defenders #10, she was also swiftly defeated once the Surfer was free to seek her out.

In theory, Thor has the brute strength and firepower to be more than a match for Nebula. He's bested Super-Skrull in Thor #464, suckered DC's Superman in JLA/Avengers #1, and fought Drax The Destroyer to a brawny standstill in Warlock and The Infinity Watch #21. Each is an equivalent cosmic adversary.

Where things sometimes fall apart for Thor is in his tendency to rely on godly might, and a hubris that fails to consider the possibility of defeat. Case in point, he was simply overruled by the Elder, Champion of the Universe, in Marvel Two-In-One Annual #7. Likewise, the innate worthiness and tenacity of Beta Ray Bill allowed Thor to be caught vulnerable and unprepared in Thor #337.

Nebula will never be worthy enough to steal Mjolnir away from Thor, but if she has a powerful enough weapon, she could certainly exploit it tactically.

Captain America and Spider-Man are a little out of their comfort zone, but can be counted on to run interference. As well as directing traffic, Cap famously stared down the overwhelming odds of Thanos in Infinity Gauntlet #4. Spidey took a run at him with a stand-in Thor earlier in that same issue.

On face value Nebula is an underdog against the combined tactical and physical powers of these three heroes. The only real way to know how she'll fare is by diving in to the action! Let's take a look...

The Tape: Avengers Ranking: Spider-Man (#2)

What Went Down...
Adrift in a void of infinite nothingness: Thor uses his enchanted hammer to draw the surviving Avengers to their destination with a magnetic field -- and smashes their way in! Inside: Nebula is there to deliver a hostile greeting!

Spidey and Cap narrowly avoid Nebula's wrist blaster as the webslinger mistakes her for a blue-skinned Atlantean. They leap clear, but remain under heavy fire as the villainess opens up both barrels with a wild spray!

Cap's shield and Thor's hammer hold strong against the intense energy blasts, but Spider-man is forced to take evasive action, employing the speed and agility of a spider to leap and wall crawl through a lethal blanket of fire!

Spidey tries to take control of his destiny with a stream of webbing, but the absence of gravity throws his aim off. Nebula easily dives over the adhesive and returns fire in a single graceful arc!

Cap and Thor do their best to come to their vulnerable ally's aid! Cap calls for Nebula's attention and throws his mighty shield into the path of her blasts, but she derisively shoots it out of the air -- and out of reach of the Captain!

Fortunately, the gambit was merely to create a distraction so Thor could unleash a powerful wind with the swing of Mjolnir! its gusting gale picks Nebula off her feet -- hurling her across the laboratory to the opposing wall!

Nebula is pinned to the wall by the mighty wind. Made of tough stuff, she chides herself for the error and endures the pressure long enough to sense an ebb in the wind's waves. She pushes against the wall with perfect timing, airborne long enough to twirl around and fire a concussive blast at the heroes!

Her renewed laser assault is cut short by two precision bursts of webbing that plug the gauntlet blasters! Spidey leaps at Nebula to press the advantage, but grossly under estimates her strength and combat prowess! She easily catches the web-slinger in mid-flight and turns his momentum into a throw!

Nebula searches for Captain America, but the super-soldier has made a dash for the central machine that's uncontrollably spewing energy. Cap recruits Thor to temper the mysterious forces, but the thunder god can only hold it back so long!

The scientist responsible for building the machine attempts to guide the heroes to a solution before its Genesis Pulse reaches maximum, but Nebula intervenes to incinerate him with a full power blast of her gauntlet!

Thor leaps forth to avenge the old man, but Nebula catches the enraged god with a direct shot to the gut!

Focused on the task at hand, Captain America recruits another of the surviving staff to learn the secret to stopping the machine. It seems it may be as simple as disrupting the flow of power from subbasement generators -- but breaking through the electromagnetic field surrounding the inductor seems impossible!

The super-soldier steels himself to fight against the awesome forces, accepting that even he may risk serious internal injury. His hand shakes as he strains to reach for the giant power coil that will end the madness. Spider-Man interrupts his struggle to lend the helping hand they need!

Years of fighting Electro have ensured Spidey's web formula is non-organic and non-conductive, allowing him to pierce the energy field with a line and begin the awesome feat of pulling the inductor loose! Nebula may have escaped in the chaos, but reality is once again restored.

The Hammer...
The Avengers may have saved the day with Spider-Man's help, but Nebula's escape clearly leaves us with an inconclusive outcome! You can chalk this one up as a draw when you check out rankings updates at the bottom of this entry.

I must say, it's nice to be back in 1990. I've generally romanticized the year in other recent featured fights. This time we're in the sweet spot of a couple of issues I've wanted to get to for quite some time.

Spider-Man's guest spot in an unlikely cosmic adventure made the team's re-assembling in Avengers #316 an action-packed episode I revisited many times over the years. There was just something right about all those elements together -- particularly with Iron Man and Vision joining back in!

Captain America is clearly out of his element, but exhibits all the determination and heroism necessary to challenge the odds throughout. Avengers #315 is at both times a small and cosmic story. The stakes are high, but the quarters are close, allowing Cap and Spider-Man to own the focus of a hero's journey.

It's getting easy to forget there was a time when Spider-Man didn't have charter membership with the Avengers. I've never been overly opposed to the idea, but there's just something that feels right about Spider-Man remaining slightly on the outside. You couldn't honestly call him a loner -- he was the star of Marvel Team-Up, and untold crossover appearances in his own, and other series. I guess it just makes sense that he ultimately swings his own way in the end.

As much as I'm a little nostalgic for a time when Marvel's brands were more strongly defined, there are things I appreciate have changed.

It's fun to revisit Nebula's early days as a slightly unremarkable space pirate who caused trouble for the Avengers. She feels a little bit classic Star Trek in look and intent here. Her design worked well enough, but the bald cyborg she became soon after feels like a strong, well conceived improvement.

Take nothing away from the images in this issue, though. Between this and the following issue: a lot of credit goes to the collaborating team of late great artist Paul Ryan, and Tom Palmer.

Ryan's renderings of the Avengers and Fantastic Four were staple references throughout the early nineties. As a penciller, he was a tremendous all-rounder, capable of consistently representing Marvel's biggest heroes with modern-classic definition. They were iconic, but identifiably contemporary.

The contrast balance I've been using for image scans really doesn't do the finished work justice. I would also argue the storytelling is better appreciated when the composition of complete pages is seen in their entirety. Ryan wasn't a heavily stylized pin-up artist and that's probably why his work can be taken for granted at times, and sorely underrated.
