The Spotlight...
- MAY090487 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #36 $3.99
It seems the Spidey offices are intent on playing with fire as plot and solicitation work in tandme to tease the return of one of comics most controversial figures -- Ben Reilly. Honestly, while Marvel will repackage the story in a director's cut mini-series, it seems highly unlikely the deceased Spider-clone will really make any sort of a contemporary return. Lord knows they already used up their gross implausibility with One More Day, but we'll try not to dwell on things that actually were awful. That is to infer; the "clone saga" wasn't the best managed moment in comics, but also wasn't as offensive as you might be led to believe. As Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly actually found a place in comics that could be described as akin to Dick Grayson's run as Nightwing, or even his current reign as Batman. I'm sure this is a discussion for another day, however. To reiterate -- Ben Reilly isn't coming back, folks. Yet.

- MAY090110 GREEN LANTERN #43 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99
The wait is nearly, sort of, kinda over! Blackest Night kicks off with the reveal of the first Black Lantern with a spotlight on Black Hand -- the GL villain whose mysterious connections to the Blackest Night were forecast all the way back in Green Lantern: Rebirth! Geoff Johns looks ready to put on a clinic as not just Green Lantern and Guardians are inundated with the skeletons in their closets, but the entire DC Universe! With Martian Manhunter already forecast for a black resurrection in the next issue, could it be he who returns to bedevil the heroes in this first Blackest Night issue, or is there someone unexpected lurking around the corner? I'm looking forward to finally finding out!!! (Love that pricetag, too!)

- MAY090136 RED ROBIN #2 $2.99
Tim Drake clashes with Ra's Al Ghul in France? Ninjas pending? First impressions of Red Robin were mostly positive, but I'm beginning to suspect that it won't be the easy-breezy series I had first expected from previews that showcased Drake's Red Robin battling ninja on European rooftops. I suppose I had a more openly superhero concept in mind, something open-ended and uncommitted to a long running storyarc, but Chris Yost/DC suggest something thematically consistent in their first issue, dwelling on the character of Tim Drake and his belief in the possibility that Bruce Wayne is alive, rather than opening the hero up to new adventures as a Daredevil-esque swinging bachelor. Which, really, isn't such a bad thing.

- APR091004 STREET FIGHTER II TURBO #7 A CVR CRUZ $3.95
Simply put: seventeen pages of fluffy comic and a back-up? Not good enough, UDON. If a Final Fight expansion is going to live up to the licensing agreement, somebody really needs to start putting some hard work into these books. I hate to single the efforts of sole writer Ken Siu-Chong out, but I don't think anyone could criticize the "artistic" output of the incredibly talented pencillers and colourists of the UDON studio. These books read lazy and at $3.95 are far from earning their worth. I don't know what penetration of these books is like outside the direct market, but it'd need to be mighty impressive. Creatively, something needs to change. It's great seeing all these characters in motion in a single place, but meandering fan service isn't worth the price of admission.

- MAY090551 UNCANNY X-MEN FIRST CLASS #1 (OF 8) $2.99
Given all the indignities the X-Men have suffered lately with the Wolverine movie and an ever-growing collection of sub-par comic books from the past few years - I've long since given up caring. Still, when a series like First Class, reimagined with the Uncanny prefix to feature the 'Giant Size' seventies revamp that introduced; Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, Banshee, and other internationals into the team -- how can you not stop and appreciate these once bouyant characters? Bound to be the best X-title on the rack.

- MAY090122 WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 (OF 12) $3.99
The eagerly anticipated DC comic strip experiment arrives! Since seeing previews of artwork for strips starring Metamorpho and Hawkman [by Mike Allred and Kyle Baker, respectively] earlier in the year, I've been positively giddy for what would become Wednesday Comics! The project is already set to garner mainstream attention when the Superman strip, by John Arcudi and Lee Bermejo, finds it's way onto USAToday.com! So theoretically it's good for you, and good for comics. Yay!
