Peter Bjorn & John - Young Folks (2006
If you have a television, radio, or friend, you've probably already heard this track ad nauseum!
Not since ABBA has a Swedish pop hook been so infectiously memorable. The whistling alone made Young Folks an instant smash hit, but guest-vocals from ex-Concretes front woman, Victoria Bergsman, contributed to a well justified exercise in warm and intelligent pop production.
At this point you might be wondering what this has to do with comics, and I'm going to come straight with you: Not a lot!
Those willing to sit through a couple of minutes of minimalist video will find this month's guest-of-honor adorning an animated shirt. The sixties iconography reflects on the retro vibe of the track, and highlights just how little connection will be needed to squeeze a quick entry out of these weekend features.
The success of the track has been a real phenomenon, seeing it rated by various sources as one of the iconic tracks of 2007. Not bad, considering the single was originally release in 2006, before finding new life online through viral popularity. If you can avoid hearing it in commercials, promotions, and on the radio long enough, you're sure to agree it's a great song.
