The Deep Dish...
- MAR082168 AVENGERS INVADERS #1 (OF 12) $2.99

Avengers/Invaders finally arrives after months of pre-game hype!
For those out of the loop; Alex Ross and Jim Kreuger will bring a displaced Invaders from the Second World War to the present, where friction and mistrust between the heroes of today and yesterday should provide some interesting sparks! Firmly placed in the current Marvel canon, watch out for WWII Cap throwing down with his successor, and lots more action! This one has the all the makings of an instant classic, but could just as easily result in a year-long flop! Ooo, carnage as a sales pitch! Nice!

- MAR080166 DC UNIVERSE SPECIAL JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA $4.99
Grant Morrison has actually said he'd prefer people read something like this after Final Crisis, and I can certainly see where he's coming from. Famous for putting brand new spins on old ideas, Morrison will revamp Libra as one of the chief villains in DC's summer blockbuster! Curiosity may kill cats, but I think we'll all be keen to get a slice of Libra's quaint history while it's available in such a convenient package. I can really appreciate the DC specials, even if I'm not into them all.
The DC Universe Zero special painted Libra as a year-too-late for his role as villain coordinator, but I'm expecting a fast track of redemption when the madness of Final Crisis kicks off!

- MAR082185 INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 $2.99
Y'know, no sooner than I try to give marketting a good wrap [Target: Superman #1], do they launch a new series of dubious merit with six different variant covers. I respect the necessity of marketting and mass media exposure for the survival of the industry, but there are certain things I'm not particularly tolerant to. This is completely without merit, and arguably a step toward self-assured destruction. I don't often do so, but I'm actually going to willfully encourage you not to buy this one. For my money, it sounds like it's going to be a pretty vanilla issue, making skipping this one as convenient as swinging over the latest droll that is Amazing Spider-man. Hopefully the title can justify itself along the way...

- MAR082188 IRON MAN VIVA LAS VEGAS #1 (OF 4) $3.99
I can't say I'm terribly interested in this mini from Iron Man director Jon Favreau, but at least there's creative merit to the tie-in! Adi Granov seems wasted elaborating on the TNA featured on the cover of Iron Man #5. Don't really know what to expect, but nothing about the material jumps out at me. If you've just seen the film, chances are you won't care, anyway.

- MAR080198 JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #45 $2.25
Gorilla Grodd is up to his old tricks in the latest issue of the kid-friendly Justice League Unlimited!
Free Comic Book Day gave me a chance to finally get my hands on an issue of Marvel Adventures, and I'd have to say, I think everything I've been saying over the past few months has been right.

Marvel and DC really have a handle on an entertaining superhero read in these all-ages comics, serving not only something broadly non-offensive, but classic in it's depiction of the heroes as free agents responding to tyranny. It's responsive no-strings attached superhero storytelling that hasn't been around for a good ten or fifteen years, so it's well worth checking out, especially for those of you suffering from event fatigue.

Mind you, at this point, as much as Superman fighting a murderous ape sounds like fun, it's hard to pass up the prospect of Grant Morrison's take on a Crisis-trilogy!
Ah, who are you kidding? You're pissing your money away! What's $2.25 for some extra fun?

- MAR082203 SECRET INVASION #2 (OF 8) SI $3.99
Speaking of fun-time events; the second issue of Marvel's 2008 event is sure to be one of the most eagerly anticipated on shelves this month! The first issue of Secret Invasion set the stage for intrigue and excitement by asking as many questions as it answered. The fate of the heroes and their alien doppelgangers continues! A potential must-read, even with Brian Bendis writing!

- MAR082218 THUNDERBOLTS REASON IN MADNESS $2.99
A series pottering under the under performing pen of Warren Ellis has found refuge in spin-offs and mini-series, it seems. Much like last week's Daredevil: Blood of the Tarantula special; I dare say this promises not only to spin an enjoyable read, but could also aleviate some of the pressure of the monthly title's malaise.
With shifty characters like Bullseye and Moonstone on the team, we all knew it was only a matter of time before this generation of Thunderbolts crumbled. Reason in Madness promises the overdue clash between Norman Osborn and Mac Gargan; who finds himself with an offer from some old running buddies. Norm still owes Gargan for throwing a spanner into his plans during Mark Millar's Marvel Knights: Spider-man, where he took the Venom Symbiote instead of the advanced costume designed and planned for. No guarantees we'll see Norm on the glider again, but after so long, it might be a refreshing change. That, or he's a Skrull...

- JAN082048 DYNAMO 5 ANNUAL #1 $5.99
- FEB082156 JACK STAFF #16 $3.50
- NOV072047 MADMAN ATOMIC COMICS #8 $2.99
- MAR082108 SCUD THE DISPOSABLE ASSASSIN #24 $3.50
- MAR082086 SUBURBAN GLAMOUR TP VOL 01 $9.99

Mmm. It almost seems as though Image want your money...
Given the individual ownership of Image properties it's a little hard to imagine coordination amongst the brands, but with four of Image's best titles releasing issues in the same week, it seems like they're potentially shooting themselves in the foot from a marketing perspective. Of course, as long as you're faceless numbers it's perfectly reasonable to treat you as if you're mentally retarded, but as individuals, you know better.

Site Update...
Not a lot to report! We've been running late, otherwise, business as usual!
The MK vs DC Fantasy Fights are sure to run every Monday to July, while May deviates to pepper the month with as many Iron Man references as time allows. Those references probably won't include one of six variant covers -- but you can expect some chat about the origin of the character, some of his battles, and all the back catalogue in the Cover 2 Cover!
Also slowly finding it's way to the Infinite Wars is one of the biggest battles of the year! I won't tell you who's involved, but it's a battle over thirty years in the making! Stay tuned, and give generously!

ths avengers invaders feels a lot like justice that was done for dc. and a it's also a bit of almost glorified fan fiction.

Ah, I guess that was always going to be the danger with this series. If there was no other indicator, the promotional attempts to stress it's relevance to the contemporary Marvel universe.

Never managed to catch any issues of Justice, but I found it an intriguing prospect. I suppose I find Ross-related projects a bit hit-and-miss, but it was a rare occasion where I couldn't really gauge expectation.

I'd like to get in on the Invaders/Avengers stuff, but I imagine it's another series I'll miss out on due to financial constraints, and the strength of the series' sales at my store.

Cheers!
