The Spotlight...
- MAY090120 BLACKEST NIGHT TALES OF THE CORPS #3 (OF 3) $3.99
Y'know, the old issue of price is a dark cloud over comics right now, and it's definitely an issue for Tales of the Corps. If you're the type of reader curious enough to buy the Secret Files, you'll probably be happy enough to drop the big bucks for short stories that elaborate on peripheral character's history. As a $2.99 book, this would be much easier to recommend. Complete at the third issue, you could very easily track the content to decide whether your want to isolate the tale from Mongul II's childhood, learn more about what enraged a Red Lantern, or grab this particular issue for it's venture into Kilowog's training as a Green Lantern. It's a great pick-up, but really targetted at those interested in backstory and character, rather than anything Blackest Night. A more accurate title might've been, War of Light: Tales from the Corps, but that's marketting for you. Tut, tut.

- MAY090516 MARVEL ZOMBIES 4 #4 (OF 4) $3.99
The first Marvel Zombies, spun out of Mark Millar's UFF arc, felt like an overdue realisation of a very basic high-concept. It quickly showed very little depth as Robert Kirkman essentially played out the same joke issue after issue with boffins from Marvel's marketting department leering over him. Fred Van Lente has completely changed my perception about the Zombies brand, however, infusing it with a zest for the Marvel Universe and it's sometimes forgotten characters. Unfortunately, the cheap spin-offs will continue with Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth, but even fathering that particular abomination, Marvel Zombies 4 has very likely been the best outing since the first! Cliffhangers are in abundance as we reach the final issue -- Kale possessed by Dormammu, The Hood without his powers, the Werewolf infected, the zombie plague airborne, Man-Thing dead!

- MAY090450 NEW AVENGERS #55 DKR $3.99
Last issue Dormammu abandoned The Hood, leaving him powerless and brutally injured. Stuart Immonen takes over art chores for the follow-up as Parker Robbins' hold over the crooks of the Marvel Universe as "Kingpin of Super-Villains" begins to dissolve. The Wrecking Crew are at the centre of the mix, but are the villains going to go the usual route of falling apart before victory, or have they been galvanized by their union? As much as Dark Reign has forced it's way into the line of Marvel comics, it feels like New Avengers has finally been liberated of the burden of crossover events, finally living up to it's Marvel superhero team potential (some fifty issues in!). Should be $2.99, but justifiable.

The Spotlight...
- MAY090484 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600 $4.99
2009 looks like it's set to be a good year for Spider-man.
Through the worst of the last few years, the return of classic heroes and villains in the title has easily been the brightest spark. If you don't believe it, track back through the sales figures collected in the Monthly Punch-Up. I would expect Doc Ock to provide the same kind of boost, leading into what looks to be an exciting return for villains like Electro and Mysterio. Brand New Day remains a stain on the Spidey mythos far more insulting than The Clone Saga, but at least the book is well and truly moving toward new positives. If that isn't a ringing enough endorsement for this jumbo-sized milestone issue, editor extraordinaire Tom Breevoort personally assures me that the book will be wall-to-wall story -- no cover gallery filler crap. I'll fully expect back-up material, but give him the benefit of the doubt, eh?

- MAY090548 DEADPOOL SUICIDE KINGS #4 (OF 5) $3.99
Tough not to call this the sleeper hit of 2009!
Initially I didn't expect a lot of the series, but it's putting together the elements of the Marvel Universe that I've long wanted to see in one book: Deadpool, Spider-man, Daredevil, Punisher, Tombstone, and on the horizon, the Wrecking Crew. What more could you ask for? Don't be fooled by other Deadpool books -- this is the one worth buying! I just wish this was the on-going format, rather than the glorified memes and droning Daniel Way plots we're lumped with.

- JAN090179 FINAL CRISIS LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #5 (OF 5) $3.99
By the end of 2008, and certainly the beginning of this year, I had a grand vision of having reviewed the entirety of Final Crisis and a good chunk of it's tie-in titles. In my humble estimation, it really was the best event series we've seen in the last five or ten years, and I regret having not found the time to do that! Legion of Three Worlds was only tangentially related, but in occupying part of the space that made up Superman's absence, it became a deliciously textured and multi-dimensional sub-plot, which hopefully means you can forgive this last issue for being so damned late. It's not a good look for DC comics, but the material really represents and justifies itself. Geoff Johns continues to make Superboy-Prime a really fun part of the DC Universe canon, while George Perez puts his classic skills to fine use, creating entire casts for three versions of the Legion! It's rare that I would have any interest in the Legion of Super Heroes and yet here, I'm loving it! Great stuff!

- MAY090135 GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #2 $2.99
The cancellation of Catwoman was a real disappointment, so to find the character represented as rendered somewhat timid by her clash with Hush [in Heart of Hush] is a little disappointing. However, moving forward, I'm sure it'll be an adequate replacement for the solo book, which will likely compliment Paul Dini's work elsewhere on the city floor, in Streets of Gotham. Assuming, of course, Catwoman's fellow Sirens, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, don't take her out in only the second issue! With friends like these...!

- MAY090112 GREEN LANTERN #44 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99
This is it! The fight you've all been waiting for!
Blackest Night is finally here and it kicks off with a big, old fashioned rumble between a Black Lantern Martian Manhunter and two of the biggest heroes of 2009, Green Lantern and Flash! It's a shame we still haven't seen the conclusion of Flash: Rebirth to get the specifics of his position during Blackest Night, but I trust you are smart enough to cope with a generalized interpretation of events. After last issues Black Hand feature, I'm looking forward to the variety these companion issues will offer to the Blackest Night story!

- MAY090499 INCREDIBLE HULK #600 $4.99
Unlike Amazing Spidey #600, Hulk does not deserve the benefit of the doubt. Buyer beware.
Rulk's true identity almost certainly will not be revealed here. The cycle of love-hate will surely continue as I resist the temptation of bombastic big superhero fights, repelled by the utterly ridiculous carrot dangling that Jeph Loeb's pseudo-mystery has offered. It's just like the Loeb/McGuinness issues of Superman/Batman, only the fun's been smothered to death.

The Spotlight...
- MAY090130 BATMAN AND ROBIN #2 $2.99
The nefarious debut of Professor Pyg looms as Batman and Robin go up against the Circus of Strange when they invade the Gotham City Police Department! The action kicks off as Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely deliver their brand new vision for the Bat-franchise in the Reborn world! The first issue might've started things off a little slow, but there's plenty more madness waiting around the corner for this all-new, all-exciting Dynamic Duo! Quite possibly the only series big enough to rival Blackest Night!

- MAY090412 CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #1 (OF 5) $3.99
It's been less than two years, but to the shock of absolutely no one, Steve Rogers is on his way back to the land of the living! His death was one of the biggest stories of 2007, covered by mainstream news outlets, and discussed the world over. Now we're going to undo all that. I really don't expect this to do much for relations between the mainstream and the comic book reading in-crowd, but we'll see if it's all worth it now that the story proper is finally kicking off. There's a lot of goodwill lost after the fake-out of the Annual special that claimed to be the beginning of the [Captain America] Reborn storyline. Here's hoping they can earn some of that credibility. Honestly, I'm feeling a little cynical about the whole situation.

- MAY090544 DEADPOOL MERC WITH A MOUTH #1 $3.99
For a long time there was a good reason for Deadpool to be touted as one of Marvel's great characters. Despite sales that failed to reflect it, in the late nineties this was a character who was every bit as funny and fresh as people say he is. Slide into the 2000's and you pretty quickly begin the deconstruction of everything that made the character work, until you get to the inane Daniel Way crap idiot kids post everywhere on the internet, and the movie version. Merc' with a Mouth, co-starring Marvel Zombies' Z-Pool, sounds like a great idea, but sadly, looks to be more of the same disappointing crud that's going to fastrack Deadpool to loathesville. This should've been the beginning of a new dynasty, but instead, it seems DP's fate is all but being sealed.

- MAY090114 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #38 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99
We're now just weeks away from Blackest Night, but let's face facts. Green Lantern Corps doesn't need a bunch of Black Lantern zombie dudes to crank up the action -- it's already one of the hottest books on shelves right now! Events haven't been hurt by foreshadowing of doom to come as the Guardians of the Universe dig a little deeper toward their own grave with yet more killing and mayhem. It'll be interesting to see how dissention in the ranks effects the Corps when the skeletons in their collective closet come out to play! Tomasi and Gleason are one of the best pairings in superhero comics right now. Don't wait until the Blackest Night has come and gone -- get reading this yesterday!

- MAY090159 JUSTICE LEAGUE CRY FOR JUSTICE #1 (OF 7) CVR A $3.99
After a lot of publicized confusing an indecision; finally DC and James Robinson are working on the same page and he can unveil his much needed revamp of the Justice League of America! I'm not sure Robinson would've been the guy I'd have tapped to fix the mess made of the JLA, but with a line-up that reintroduces Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Atom, Captain Marvel, and a handful of other characters into the League, I don't see how you could go wrong! Now if we could just guarantee that they make the transition over into the monthly JLA line-up, then we'd be set...

- MAY090514 MARVEL DIVAS #1 (OF 4) $3.99
I keep making the frustrating mistake of confusing this with fellow all-girl Marvel book, Models Inc. With artwork by Tonci Zonjic lending a typical grounded version of the superhero universe, it looks as if the series will certainly look good, whilst reading well, as well. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa handles the almost Sex and the City-esque girl power line-up of Photon, Firestar, Black Cat, and Hellcat, in what seems sure to be a heckuva lot of fun! I don't know how well it will compliment Models Inc, but if Marvel want to build a wing around their female properties, why not? Now if we could just get a Lady Liberators book...

- MAY090169 SOLOMON GRUNDY #5 (OF 7) $2.99
Ideally, we'll get a chance to go back and revisit all of these issues later in the year (October), because there hasn't been a month gone by that an issue of Solomon Grundy hasn't deserved a spot here on The Comic Book Fight Club! Admittedly, as a narrative, it's a bit like a 4x4 speeding in mud. This isn't the most progressive or cerebral title you'll find on shelves, but Scott Kolins is competent as both writer and artist, making the very best of his monthly punch-ups between interesting combinations. It's Solomon Grundy and it's a lot of fun. I'm not sure I could ask for more than that, but if I did, Amazo might just be it!

The Spotlight...
- APR090480 AVENGERS INITIATIVE #25 DKR $2.99
After being abandoned, it looks like the Shadow Initiative is about to be embraced by the corrupted regime of Norman Osborn and his Dark Reign! I guess when you're as cuckoo for coco puffs as Osborn you can never quite have enough private assassination squads, and in Taskmaster he gets a fine mercenary leader to add to his squad of Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Hood underlings! It's another interesting beat for a book that's managed to walk that fine line between being directly connected to the on-going escapades of the Marvel Universe, and being very much it's own comic full of great characters.

- APR090494 DAREDEVIL #119 $2.99
On his way out, Ed Brubaker is really restoring Daredevil to the prominence of his entry as Return of the King ramps up toward it's big conclusion! It's tough to not look forward to a fresh influence on the character who undeniably lost some of his lustre under the last creative team(s), but there's enough here to really savor what this regime has been able to do. It looks like Andy Diggle will be bringing Daredevil back into the Marvel Universe, which is something that will no doubt garner resentment from some readers, but has the potential to really shake off the dust and freshen up this much loved character. He's been away cornered-off from the Marvel Universe for the bulk of the decade, so there's a lot of fertile ground there for the gradual intrusion of Dark Reign and the return of history [Hawkeye].

- APR090152 DETECTIVE COMICS #854 $3.99
I can't actually remember the last time Batman wasn't a regular in Detective Comics, but I'm all for the change! Detective continues the Reborn revamp with a striking redefinition of one of DC's longest running titles, replacing the Dark Knight detective with his female equivalent - Batwoman. Those of you trained on the mainstream will remember Batwoman as the much hyped debuting character from 52, who went on to do very little more than be publicized for being gay. The mistakes of the past will presumably be resolved as writer/creator, Greg Rucka, gets the opportunity to stretch the Batwoman's wings in her first starring solo-series. Unsurprisingly, The Question (Renee Montoya) will also return alongside her ally in the Co-Feature that finally returns back-up material to Detective Comics! Shame about the price, but considering the stunning visuals of JH Williams, I'll forgive it. Seriously, you could buy this thing for the art alone -- something I'm not especially prone to considering!

- APR090158 GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #1 $2.99
The cancellation of Catwoman earlier in the year was an absolute disappointment, but a decision that felt like it were part of a bigger picture. I'd like to think Gotham City Sirens was always part of the plan, delivering the continuation of Catwoman's adventures as told in the post-RIP interim in Batman and Detective Comics. Sirens, just like those tales, were handled by fan-favourite writer Paul Dini, who'll reunite with Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn, to produce a series sure to set fans of Batman: The Animated Series atingle with anticipation! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't feeling a little bit cynical, particularly with the gratuitous penchant for ass shots cover artist Guillem March has shown, but the excitement begun with Batman & Robin has permeated through the diversity of the Reborn line-up.

- APR090183 GREEN LANTERN #42 $2.99
We're just a month away from the big event! Blackest Night is right around the corner, but before we have desert, we've got to eat our greens. Or at least, that's the case for Larfleeze -- possessor of the orange light of avarice! The introduction of the spectrum has gotten a little cramped as Geoff Johns fills the space between the GL #25 2007 teaser and the 2009 event, but we've got the information we need to move forward. Hard to ignore the theory that Hal Jordan will save the day in BN with a combination of the powers of light, but it's just a little too obvious for my liking.
Hey, Larfleeze wants everything!Maybe he's the key!

- APR090457 NEW AVENGERS #54 DKR $3.99
For years Brother Voodoo was a bit of an in-joke amongst online punters and fans of Fred Hembeck, but lo and behold, Marvel are finally going to make good on what those fans want! Since hitting fifty issues it really feels like Brian Bendis has just finally started to deliver on the Avengers comic he was always supposed to be writing. Dark Reign weighs heavily on the title, but unlike distracted issues based on Civil War and other stories, this is a book that is all about it's own story. Dr. Strange, Son of Satan, and Dormammu are an exciting list of guest stars as the Secret Avengers clash with The Hood to prevent the forces of evil taking possession of the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme -- destined to be Brother Voodoo's!

The Spotlight...
- APR090150 BATMAN #687 $3.99
In the wake of the battle with Jason Todd; Dick Grayson and the family of heroes who survive Bruce Wayne are forced to come to terms with the new future they are to make for themselves. Gotham City is crying out for a hero as villains like Scarecrow and Dr. Phosphorus run amok, and after taking back the mantle from the false Batman (Todd), the new Batman must face a destiny designed by elements much larger than him. Though it will be defying Bruce Wayne's wishes to do so, Dick Grayson must become the Dark Knight, and he must save the city that needs him. Sure to be a valuable issue from Judd Winick, which will have the opportunity to tie up some of the loose ends left by Battle for the Cowl.

- APR090491 BETA RAY BILL GODHUNTER #1 (OF 3) $3.99
We're into the fourth year of Infinite Wars competition at this point, and yet, despite my best efforts, we've never actually managed to get Beta Ray Bill into competition. This strikes me as a real travesty, but with our perspective squarely focused on release from 2009, this series gives new hope to all you Beta Ray fans who've felt similarly to me. Godhunter sees Beta Ray Bill embark upon a revenge mission against the devourer of worlds -- Galactus! No small feat, but for the guy who beat up Thor and stole his hammer in their first encounter, it might just be in the realm of possibility! Oh, and the price? I'm told the issue includes a reprint of BRB's first appearance -- containing his fated battle with Thor!

- APR090176 FLASH REBIRTH #3 (OF 6) $2.99
Will the "Rebirth" of Barry Allen result in the shortest comeback in the history of comics? Ohhhh, of course not! Flash has found himself transformed into the personification of evil for speedsters and it's up to his old pals in the Justice League to help him out, but does the fastest man alive have the patience for quarantine? Geoff Johns' tour de force continues as he reinstates Barry Allen as head Flash of the DCU. How's he going to do that? With a race against Superman, of course! It still amazes me just how unoffensive the return of Allen has ultimately turned out to be, but I wonder if Rebirth might be outrun by Blackest Night.

- APR090185 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #37 $2.99
The Prelude to Blackest Night continues, inducing little baby tears in all fanboys desperately anticipating the arrival of the comics event two (plus) years in the making! Making the wait all the more possible is the work of Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, whose work on the "secondary" Green Lantern title has arguably surpassed the labored efforts of the flagship Hal Jordan book! The guys on Corps haven't just settled for quality, though. No, no. They're cramming as much material as they can into every issue ahead of Blackest Night proper, deliving into the War of Light with prison riots, planetary wars, and Sodom Yat hurling himself into the sun! I'm exhausted just talking about it! Whooo!

- APR090154 RED ROBIN #1 $2.99
The Bat relaunch continues with Red Robin as Tim Drake blossoms ino his own hero! From the outside looking in, this looks like a touch-and-go read. Ramon Bachs' artwork isn't exactly setting me atingle, but it's hard not to be swept up in the promise of the Reborn books. Is it possible DC could produce a clean sweep of quality titles for their Bat-relaunch, or will this be the albatross? Y'know, with Tim Drake embarking on international adventures against ninja to prove Bruce Wayne is still alive... I think it might just have legs! It'll be particularly interesting to see how this book plays a part in the eventual return of Batman, which, according to vague reports, will eventually fall into the domain of Batman and Robin writer, Grant Morrison. He's the guy who "killed" Batman in the first place. Well, no. That was Darkseid. Well, actually, I don't know that Darkseid isn't Grant Morrison. I mean, Morrison's Scottish, and Darkseid does wear that little mini-skirt...
