The Deep Dish...
- SEP082330 DAREDEVIL & CAPTAIN AMERICA DEAD ON ARRIVAL (MR) $4.99
Cool your jets, hotshot! Fanboys might still regard the plodding competence of Ed Brubaker's Daredevil and Captain America as some of the best comics on Marvel's catalogue, but this is not a super-spectacular combining the two titles! The European invasion continues with this first-time American presentation of a mature urban mystery told by Italian creators; Tito Faraci (Nick Raider) and Claudio Villa (Tex Willer)! Bellisimo!

- AUG080116 FINAL CRISIS RESIST #1 $3.99
Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation domination of the DC Universe continues within the contained reference space of Final Crisis and it's various spin-offs. Strangely enough, I've come across some not quite sure how to read it, which is a shame. I'm sure many of these commentators have been the same people calling for this kind of approach to the universe-wide crossover in the past. DC's admirable attempts continue in Resist, where the fate of humanity rests with an unlikely collective led by Snapper Carr, Mr. Terrific, Checkmate, and the villainous sheline -- Cheetah! Exactly the kind of bizarre event-driven character interaction that can be one of the greatest advantages of the corporate publisher!

- SEP082344 IRON MAN END $4.99
Looking a tad on the retro side for my tastes, but like all End books, an intriguing prospect! Sweetening the deal is the return of classic writers, David Michelinie and Bob Layton, with Bernard Chang on pencils. A semi-retired Iron Man is forced to don the suit once more as Tony Stark's industrial revolution comes under attack in this series a long-time in the making. For those who came in late: the "End" specials suppose to tell the final stories of their superhero stars. The Micheline/Layton script endured a rare stay in development hell for comics.

- AUG080169 JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #20 $2.99
Geoff Johns continues a trademark juggling act that finally brings the Justice Societys of two different worlds into titantic battle! While they struggle over the fate of interdimensonal refugee, Powergirl; Starman embarks on a sub-plot set to have ramifications in the thirty-first century! I've never been a fan of the Legion, but Johns' dedication to the brand, and attempts to win modern readers over with various in-roads (Superman, Superboy-Prime...) is worthy of acknowledgment. As with Final Crisis, DC seems to be doing so much right on paper, even if the sales figures aren't consistently backing that up.

- SEP082354 MARVEL ZOMBIES 3 #2 (OF 4) $3.99
Fred Van Lente continues to unravel the design of the Earth-2419 much as we did last month in this fifth instalment/third numerical in the Marvel Zombies promotional milking! As if following some of our advice, Van Lente sends robotic former-Avengers, Machine Man and Jocasta, into the dimension populated by previously overlooked undead! The zombie Kingpin sets his sights on the heroes, while, presumably, zombie Morbius continues his sinister schemes on Earth-616!

- SEP080106 TERRA #1 (OF 4) $2.99
On the other hand, what's the deal with all these Teen Titans solo spin-offs?...
Alright, alright! You can't blame them for working the brand and with Powergirl and Dr. Mid-Nite guest starring this issue, there's something for fans of the other corners. Never one to really enjoy the Teen books, but Terra looks mildly interesting.

- SEP080095 TRINITY #23 $2.99
Black Adam is sure to be a welcome addition to DC's third and surprisingly modest weekly series rolls on. Presumably the disappearance of the titular trio (Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman) isn't a reference to events in Final Crisis, which is arguably a disappointing response to the event-centric criticisms of Countdown. As resistant as the creators might be to comparison, if I had to choose, this would be the weekly series that's grabbed me the least as a removed, and uninspiringly conventional series.

- SEP082306 ULTIMATUM #1 (OF 5) $3.99
According to solicitations, the end is near! No kidding!
The Ultimate brand continues to flop and slap as it desperately fights the compelling tug of contemporary plumbing. Jeph Loeb continues his whirlwind tour of the hipcat mirror of the "616," gliding noisly through the books like a wanton harbinger of doom. Not that Bendis' quiet crossover 'Ultimate Secret' didn't leave the taste of arse in the mouths of free-thinking humans, anyway. I wonder if Mr. Millar will still be kind enough to do that new Ultimates story he mentioned, or is his time better spent on more prosperous brands?
